Description
- Indicated for the treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by two or more susceptible organisms
- Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
Dosage recommendations
- 100-750 mg twice daily for adults
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
- Duration of treatment depends upon the severity of infection and clinical response
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Interferes with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for the synthesis of bacterial DNA
Interaction precautions
- Avoid concurrent administration with Magnesium or Aluminum containing antacids
- Should not be taken concurrently with milk or other dairy products
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Disturbances of the central nervous system
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain
- Mild photosensitivity
Pregnancy lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Not recommended for nursing mothers
Special populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population

- May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion
- May cause abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment
