Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
- Urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tract infections
- Gonorrhoea and septicaemia
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Enteric fever and infective diarrhea
- Bone and joint infection
- Eye, ear, nose and throat infections
- Infections of the biliary tract and pelvic infections
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
- Bactericidal action from interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage for urinary tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Dosage for respiratory tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Dosage in gonorrhoea: Single dose of 250 or 500 mg
- Dosage for cystic fibrosis: 750 mg twice daily
- Dosage adjustment in impaired renal function
- Dosage for adolescents and children: 7.5-15 mg/kg/day
- Usual treatment period for acute infections: 5 to 10 days
Administration
- Instruction for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Checking the bag for leaks and precipitates
- Regulating the rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum-containing antacids or sucralfate
- Avoid concurrent use with products containing calcium, iron, or zinc
- Avoid concurrent use with milk or dairy products which may reduce absorption of Procin
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system disturbances
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain
- Mild photosensitivity
- Transient increase in liver enzymes
- Risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for nursing mothers due to secretion in milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids and dairy products
Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, renal and hepatic impairment
- Crystalluria, haematuria, reversible renal toxicity
