Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Treatment of infections resistant to other antibiotics including Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins
- Treatment of infections in urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal tracts, and septicaemia
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action through interference with DNA gyrase
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage range for lower and upper urinary tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Dosage range for respiratory tract infections: 250-500mg twice daily
- Single dose for gonorrhea: 250 or 500 mg
- Dosage for cystic fibrosis: 750 mg twice daily
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
Administration
- Instructions for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Suspend bag from hanger
- Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with Magnesium or Aluminum containing antacids
- Avoid concurrent administration with other products containing Calcium, Iron or Zinc
- Do not take concurrently with milk or other dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Disturbances of the central nervous system
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain
- Mild photosensitivity
- Transient increase in liver enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential risk of arthropathy
- Not recommended for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium/aluminium antacids or other products containing calcium, iron, and zinc
- Avoid concurrent administration with milk or yogurt alone
Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- Seizures, hallucinations, confusion
- Renal and hepatic impairment
- Crystalluria, haematuria, reversible renal toxicity
