Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
Broad spectrum of activity
Active against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
Bactericidal action from interference with DNA gyrase
Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
Widely distributed into the body tissues and fluids
Half-life of about 3.5 hours
Excreted in the urine
Dosage determined by severity and type of infection, sensitivity of causative organisms, age, weight, and renal function
Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
Different dosages for different types of infections (e.g., urinary tract, respiratory tract, gonorrhea)
Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
