Description
- Rocipro is indicated for the treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms.
- It can be used for infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics including Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins.
- As antibacterial concentrations of Rocipro are obtained in serum and body tissues as well as in the urine following administration by mouth.
- Rocipro has been suggested for use in the treatment of a wide range of infections caused by susceptible organisms including infections of the urinary, respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts, gonorrhea and septicaemia.
- Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent with broad spectrum of activity.
- It is active against most gram negative aerobic bacteria including Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Dosage Range
- 100-750 mg for adults
- 250-500 mg for urinary tract infections
- 250-500 mg for respiratory tract infections
- 750 mg for Streptococcus pneumonia infection
- 250-500 mg for gonorrhea
- 500-750 mg for most other infections
- 750 mg for adults with pseudomonal infections of the lower respiratory tract
Dosage Recommendations
- Depends on severity, type of infection, sensitivity of the causative organisms, age, weight, and renal function of the patient
Dosage Duration
- 5 to 10 days for acute infections with tablets
- Three days for uncomplicated urinary tract infection with extended-release tablets
- 7-14 days for mild to severe urinary tract infections with IV infusion
- 7-14 days for mild to severe lower respiratory tract infections with IV infusion
- 10-14 days for nosocomial pneumonia with IV infusion
- 7-14 days for skin and skin structure infections with IV infusion
- More than 4-6 weeks for bone and joint infection with IV infusion
- 28 days for chronic bacterial prostatitis with IV infusion
Dosage Adjustment
- Not usually required except in patients with severe renal impairment
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., nausea, diarrhea, vomiting)
- Disturbances of the central nervous system (e.g., headache, dizziness)
- Hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., skin rash, pruritus)
- Joint pain, mild photosensitivity, transient increase in liver enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for administration to nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders or factors predisposing to seizures and convulsions
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids and dairy products
Special Populations
- Not a first-choice drug in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- Seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for bacterial DNA synthesis
- Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
- Widely distributed into the body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
