Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent.
- Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.
- Active against Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, penicillinase producing and non penicillinase producing staphylococci.
- Bactericidal action resulting from interference with DNA gyrase.
- Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
- Widely distributed into the body tissues and fluids.
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours.
- 30-50% oral dose excreted in urine within 24 hours.
Dosage and administration
- Dosage determined by severity and type of infection, sensitivity of the causative organism(s), age, weight, and renal function of the patient.
- Different dosages for adults, adolescents, children, and patients with impaired renal function.
- Duration of treatment based on severity of infection, clinical response, and bacteriological findings.
- General dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily, may vary based on the type of infection.
- Specific dosages for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gonorrhea, cystic fibrosis, and other infections.
- Usual treatment period for acute infections is 5 to 10 days with continued treatment for three days after signs and symptoms disappear.
- Extended-release tablet dosage for uncomplicated urinary tract infection: 1000 mg tablet once daily for three days.
- Intravenous infusion dosage for different types of infections.
Interaction and contraindications
- Concurrent administration with Magnesium or Aluminum containing antacids or sucralfate should be avoided.
- Concurrent use with other products containing Calcium, Iron, or Zinc should be managed with specific timing.
- Avoid concurrent use with milk or other dairy products due to reduced absorption of the medicine.
- Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones.
