Description
- Xirocip XR is a synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent with a broad spectrum of activity. It is indicated for the treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms, including those resistant to other antibiotics.
Dosage Recommendations
- The recommended dosage for adults ranges from 100-750 mg twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. Infections of the lower and upper urinary tract may require 250-500 mg twice daily. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with impaired renal function or elderly patients.
Pharmacology
- Ciprofloxacin, the active ingredient in Xirocip XR, exerts its bactericidal action by interfering with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for the synthesis of bacterial DNA. It is rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and widely distributed into body tissues and fluids.
Indications
- Xirocip XR is indicated for the treatment of a wide range of infections caused by susceptible organisms, including urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tract infections, gonorrhea, and septicaemia.
Administration
- Xirocip XR should be administered as per the instructions provided. In the case of IV infusion, specific steps for preparation and administration need to be followed.
Interaction
- Concurrent administration of Xirocip XR should be avoided with certain products such as magnesium or aluminum containing antacids, sucralfate, or dairy products, as they may affect absorption of the medication.
Contraindications
- Xirocip XR is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones.
Side Effects
- Possible side effects of Xirocip XR may include gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, joint pain, mild photosensitivity, and transient increase in liver enzymes.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Studies have shown that ciprofloxacin has the potential to cause arthropathy in immature animals, therefore its use during pregnancy is not recommended. It is also not recommended for nursing mothers due to its secretion in milk.
Precautions & Warnings
- Xirocip XR should be used with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders such as arteriosclerosis or epilepsy. Certain precautions regarding the administration and concurrent use of other products should be taken into consideration.
Use in Special Populations
- Although effective in clinical trials, Xirocip XR is not the first choice for the pediatric population.
Overdose Effects
- Overdose following Xirocip XR administration may lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, and renal and hepatic impairment among other effects.
Therapeutic Class
- Xirocip XR belongs to the therapeutic class of 4-Quinolone preparations and Anti-diarrhoeal Antimicrobial drugs.
Storage Conditions
- Xirocip XR should be stored below 30°C temperature, protected from light and moisture, and kept out of the reach of children.
