Indications

Pharmacology

Inhibits DNA synthesis in susceptible organisms

Dosage

  • Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis: 400 mg for 5 days
  • Acute Sinusitis: 400 mg for 10 days
  • Community-acquired Pneumonia: 400 mg for 7-14 days
  • Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections: 400 mg for 7-10 days
  • Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections: 400 mg single dose or 200 mg for 3 days
  • Complicated Urinary Tract Infections: 400 mg for 7-10 days
  • Acute Pyelonephritis: 400 mg for 7-10 days
  • Uncomplicated Urethral Gonorrhea in Men: 400 mg as a single dose

Administration

Can be administered without regard to food

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to gatifloxacin or any quinolone antimicrobial agents

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy: Use only if potential benefit outweighs potential risk to the fetus
  • Lactation: Caution when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

Administered with caution in the presence of renal insufficiency

Use in Special Populations

  • Renal Impaired Patient:
    • Creatinine Clearance 40 mL/min: 400 mg daily
    • Creatinine Clearance < 40 mL/min: 400 mg 200 mg daily
  • Dialysis Patients:
    • Hemodialysis: 400 mg 200 mg daily
    • Continuous peritoneal dialysis: 400 mg 200 mg daily
  • Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric populations

Overdose Effects

Low potential for acute toxicity, symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended
