Description
- Gaticin is an antibacterial medication used to treat various infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Indications
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Acute sinusitis
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
- Complicated urinary tract infections
- Pyelonephritis
- Uncomplicated urethral and cervical gonorrhea
- Acute, uncomplicated rectal infections in women
Pharmacology
- Gatifloxacin inhibits DNA synthesis in susceptible organisms by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV essential for bacterial reproduction and cell division.
Dosage
- 400 mg for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis for 5 days
- 400 mg for acute sinusitis for 10 days
- 400 mg for community-acquired pneumonia for 7-14 days
- 400 mg for uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections for 7-10 days
- 400 mg single dose or 200 mg for 3 days for uncomplicated urinary tract infections
- 400 mg for complicated urinary tract infections for 7-10 days
- 400 mg for pyelonephritis for 7-10 days
- 400 mg single dose for uncomplicated urethral gonorrhea in men
Administration
- Gatifloxacin can be administered without regard to food.
Contraindications
- Gatifloxacin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Gatifloxacin, quinolone antimicrobial agents, or any other components of this product.
Side Effects
- Common side effects include nausea
- vomiting
- stomach pain
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- headache.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy is recommended only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus
- Caution should be exercised when gatifloxacin is administered to a nursing woman.
Precautions & Warnings
- Gaticin should be administered with caution in the presence of renal insufficiency.
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment
- The safety and effectiveness of Gaticin in pediatric populations (<18 years of age) have not been established.
Overdose Effects
- In the event of acute oral overdose, the stomach should be emptied by inducing vomiting or by gastric lavage
- The patient should be carefully observed and given symptomatic and supportive treatment.
