Indications

Pharmacology
- Inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins
- Lysis of bacteria due to activity of cell wall autolytic enzymes
Dosage
- Intra-articular dosage for adults and children
- Intraperitoneal dosage for adults and children
- Intrapleural dosage for adults and children
- Intravenous dosage for Meningitis in adults and children
- Oral dosage for various infections in adults and children
- Parenteral dosage for susceptible infections in adults and children
- Dosage for septicaemia in adults and children
Administration
Take on an empty stomach, 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals
Interaction
- May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives
- May alter INR while on warfarin and phenindione
- May reduce efficacy of oral typhoid vaccines
- May reduce excretion of methotrexate
- Reduced excretion with probenecid and sulfinpyrazone
- Increased risk of toxicity with probenecid and sulfinpyrazone
- Increased skin reactions with allopurinol
- Reduced absorption with chloroquine
- Interference with bactericidal action by bacteriostatic antibacterials

Hypersensitivity to ampicillin and other penicillins

Overdose Effects
- Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
- Management: Symptomatic and supportive treatment, may be removed from circulation by hemodialysis

Storage Conditions
