Indications
- Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia
- Effective against Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Effective against Haemophilus influenzae
- Effective against Moraxella catarrhalis
- Effective against Mycoplasma pneumoniae
- Effective against Chlamydia pneumoniae

Pharmacology
- Gemifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic
- Bactericidal with minimum bactericidal concentrations
- Inhibits DNA synthesis through inhibition of bacterial type II topoisomerases
- Rapid absorption after oral administration
- Widely distributed throughout the body
- Rapid distribution into target tissues and body fluids
- Excretion in urine and feces
- AUC values slightly higher in women than in men
Dosage & Administration
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 320 mg once daily for 5 days
- Community-acquired pneumonia (Mild to moderate severity): 320 mg once daily for 5 days
- Extended treatment for multi-drug resistant strains: 320 mg once daily for 7 days
Interaction
- Significantly reduced absorption with aluminium or magnesium containing antacids
- Significantly reduced absorption with iron salts
- No clinically significant interactions with omeprazole, theophylline, digoxin, warfarin, or oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Gemifloxacin and other quinolones
- Previous tendon damage with fluoroquinolones
- Not for use in children under 18 years of age
Side Effects
- Adverse events include abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, nausea, rash, vomiting
- Infrequent side effects: fungal overgrowth, dizziness, insomnia, urticaria, pruritis, skin rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not to be used in pregnant or lactating women
- Safety and efficacy not established in pregnant or lactating women
Precautions & Warnings
- Dosage adjustment for severe impairment of renal function
- Adequate hydration to prevent concentrated urine and crystalluria
- May cause dizziness; caution while operating machinery
- Tendinitis and tendon rupture precautions
- Use with caution in patients predisposed to QTc interval prolongation
- Use with caution in patients with epilepsy
Use in Special Populations
- No dose adjustment for mild/moderate renal impairment
- Dosage modification for severe renal dysfunction
- Special dosage guidelines for patients on dialysis
- No dose adjustment for patients with hepatic impairment
- No dose adjustment for elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote known
- Symptomatic treatment recommended
- Patient should be carefully observed
- Adequate hydration to be maintained
