Indications
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by specific bacteria
- Community-acquired pneumonia of mild to moderate severity caused by specific bacteria
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action
- Inhibition of bacterial DNA synthesis
- Rapid absorption after oral administration
- Widely distributed throughout the body
- Excretion in urine and feces
Dosage & Administration
- 320 mg once daily for 5 days for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- 320 mg tablet daily for 5 days for community-acquired pneumonia (known or suspected S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. pneumoniae, or C. pneumoniae infection)
- 320 mg tablet daily for 7 days for community-acquired pneumonia (known or suspected multi-drug resistant S. pneumoniae, K.pneumoniae, or M. catarrhalis infection)
Interaction
- Reduced absorption with aluminium or magnesium containing antacids and iron salts
- No significant interactions with omeprazole, theophylline, digoxin, warfarin, oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Gemifloxacin and other quinolones
- Previous tendon damage with fluoroquinolones
- Not for use in children under 18 years of age

Precautions & Warnings
- Dosage alteration for severe renal function impairment
- Adequate hydration to prevent concentrated urine and crystalluria
- Caution for potential dizziness
- Risk of tendinitis and tendon ruptures
- Caution in patients predisposed to QTc interval prolongation or taking medications that affect QTc interval
- Caution in patients with epilepsy
Use in Special Populations
- No dose adjustment required in mild/moderate renal impairment
- Dosage modification for severe renal dysfunction
- Dose adjustment not required for hepatic impairment
- No dose adjustment for elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote known
- Dialysis not useful in overdose
- Symptomatic treatment and adequate hydration recommended in case of overdose
