Indications
- Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia
- Adults use only
- Bacterial infections caused by sensitive organisms
Pharmacology
- Fluoroquinolone antibiotic
- Bactericidal with minimum bactericidal concentrations
- Inhibition of DNA synthesis through bacterial type II topoisomerases
Dosage & Administration
- 320 mg once daily for 5 days for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- 320 mg tablet daily for 5 days for community-acquired pneumonia (mild to moderate severity)
- 320 mg tablet daily for 7 days for multi-drug resistant strains
Interaction
- Reduced absorption with aluminium or magnesium containing antacids and iron salts
- No clinically significant interactions observed with omeprazole, theophylline, digoxin, warfarin, and oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Gemifloxacin and other quinolones
- Previous tendon damage with fluoroquinolones
- Not for use in children under 18 years of age

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Dosage adjustment for severe impairment of renal function
- Adequate hydration to prevent concentrated urine and crystalluria
- May cause dizziness
- Tendinitis and tendon ruptures may occur
- QTc interval prolongation observed
- Caution in patients predisposed to QTc interval prolongation or epilepsy
Use in Special Populations
- Dose adjustment for severe renal dysfunction
- Patients on haemodialysis or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis therapy should receive 160 mg once daily
- No dose adjustment for hepatic impairment
- Elderly patients: no dose adjustment required
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote known
- Stomach should be emptied in case of acute oral overdosage
- Patient should be carefully observed and treated symptomatically
