Indications
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by specific bacteria
- Community-acquired pneumonia caused by specific bacteria
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal
- Inhibition of DNA synthesis
- Rapid absorption after oral administration
Dosage & Administration
- 320 mg once daily for 5 days for chronic bronchitis
- One 320 mg tablet daily for 5 days for pneumonia (mild to moderate severity) caused by specific bacteria
- One 320 mg tablet daily for 7 days for pneumonia caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria
Interaction
- Reduced absorption with specific antacids and iron salts
- No clinically significant interactions observed with specific medications
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Gemifloxacin and other quinolones
- Previous tendon damage with fluoroquinolones
- Not for use in children under 18 years of age

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Dosage alteration for severe renal impairment
- Adequate hydration to prevent crystalluria
- Dizziness may occur
- Tendinitis and tendon ruptures may occur, especially in elderly patients
- Small mean increase in QTc interval observed
- Caution in patients predisposed to QTc prolongation
- Caution in patients with epilepsy
Use in Special Populations
- No dose adjustment for mild/moderate renal impairment
- Dose adjustment for severe renal dysfunction
- Dosage guidelines for patients on haemodialysis or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis therapy
- No dose adjustment for hepatic impairment
- No dose adjustment for elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote known
- Dialysis not useful in overdose
- Symptomatic treatment recommended
- Adequate hydration to be maintained
