Description

DosageAndAdministration
- Recommended dosage for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 320mg once daily for 5 days. For community-acquired pneumonia (mild to moderate severity), the dosage varies based on the suspected infection.
Pharmacology
- Gemifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic with bactericidal properties. It acts by inhibiting DNA synthesis through the inhibition of bacterial type II topoisomerases, DNA gyrase, and/or topoisomerase IV (TOPO IV).
PrecautionsAndWarnings
- Patients with severe impairment of renal function should have their dosage regimen altered. Adequate hydration is important to prevent concentrated urine and crystalluria. Xemi may cause dizziness and caution is advised while driving or operating machinery.
Contraindications
- Not recommended for individuals with known hypersensitivity to gemifloxacin and other quinolones. It should not be used in children under 18 years of age.
Indications
- Used for the treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia of mild to moderate severity caused by specific bacterial strains.
Interaction
- Absorption of Xemi is significantly reduced when taken concomitantly with aluminium or magnesium-containing antacids and iron salts. It should be taken at least 2 hours before or 3 hours after these agents.
SideEffects
- Common adverse events include abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, nausea, rash, and vomiting. Additionally, fungal overgrowth, dizziness, insomnia, urticaria, and skin rash may occur infrequently.
