Description
- Synthetic antibacterial agent

Pharmacology
- Inhibition of bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
- Required for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination
- In vitro activity against a wide range of microorganisms
Dosage
- Available in 250mg, 500mg, and 750mg tablets
- Oral solution for administration
- Intravenous infusion for injection
- Usual dose for adults and children
- Sequential therapy (intravenous to oral) may be instituted at the discretion of the physician
Administration
- Instructions for the use of Levofloxacin infusion

- Proper fluid level in drip chamber

Interaction
- Avoid co-administration with solutions containing multivalent cations
- Reduction of absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents
- Increase in risk with NSAID and warfarin co-administration
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents
Side Effects
- Possible risk of retinal detachment
- Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and flatulence
- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity
- Very rare side effects: tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
