Indications

Description
Synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent
Mode of Action
Inhibition of bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase, required for DNA replication, transcription repair, and recombination
Dosage
- 250 mg or 500 mg or 750 mg for adults
- Dosing according to different types of infections and age groups for children
- Can be administered orally or by intravenous infusion
- Sequential therapy (intravenous to oral) may be instituted
Administration
- Instructions for the use of Levofloxacin Infusion
- Precautions to avoid leaks, cloudy solution, and air in the administration set
Interaction
- Avoid co-administration with multivalent cations
- Reduction of absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents
- Increased risk with NSAIDs and warfarin
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, quinolone antimicrobial agents, or any other components of the product
Side Effects
- Risk of retinal detachment
- Common side effects of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and flatulence
- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity (0.1%)
- Very rare occurrences of tremors, depression, anxiety, and confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing, effects on the unborn child or nursing infant are unknown
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate water intake to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in the presence of renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Low potential for acute toxicity
- Measures for acute overdosage include emptying the stomach and maintaining appropriate hydration
