Description
Synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration
Pharmacology
Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
Dosage
- Usual dose of 250 mg or 500 mg or 750 mg administered orally every 24 hours
- Dosage for acute sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, urinary-tract infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, enteric fever, and diarrhea
Administration
Instructions for the Use of Levofloxacin Infusion
Interaction
- No co-administration with any solution containing multivalent cations
- Reduced absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents
- Increased risk of CNS stimulation with NSAIDs
- Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents
Side Effects

- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity (0.1%)
- Rarely seen side-effects like tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate amount of water should be taken to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment required in presence of renal insufficiency
