Description
Levin is a synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration. Chemically levofloxacin is a chiral fluorinated carboxyquinolone.
Indications
- Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis
- Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of acute pyelonephritis
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of enteric infections
Pharmacology
Broad-spectrum third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic with in vitro activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms. Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase.
Dosage

- Pediatric Dosage:
- Children 6 months to <5 years: 10 mg/kg every 12 hours
- Children >5 years: 10 mg/kg every 24 hours
Administration
- Levofloxacin Infusion Instructions:
- Check the container for leaks
- Do not use if the solution is cloudy or a precipitate is present
- Suspend container from hanger
- Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
- Intravenous Administration: Levofloxacin injection should only be administered by slow intravenous infusion
Interactions
- Contraindicated Co-administration: No quinolone should be co-administered with any solution containing multivalent cations
- Reduced Absorption:
- Antacids
- Iron
- Adsorbents
- Potential Risks:
- NSAID may increase the risk of CNS stimulation
- Warfarin may increase the risk of bleeding
Contraindications
Levofloxacin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, quinolone antimicrobial agents, or any other components of this product.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Precautions
- Levofloxacin Injection should only be administered by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate water intake to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
Levofloxacin exhibits a low potential for acute toxicity. In case of acute overdosage, the stomach should be emptied and the patient should be kept under observation with appropriate hydration maintained.
