Description

Levin is a synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration. Chemically levofloxacin is a chiral fluorinated carboxyquinolone.

Indications

  • Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of acute pyelonephritis
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Treatment of enteric infections

Pharmacology

Broad-spectrum third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic with in vitro activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms. Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase.

Dosage

  • Usual Dose:
    • 250 mg
    • 500 mg
    • 750 mg administered orally every 24 hours

  • Pediatric Dosage:
    • Children 6 months to <5 years: 10 mg/kg every 12 hours
    • Children >5 years: 10 mg/kg every 24 hours

Administration

  • Levofloxacin Infusion Instructions:
    • Check the container for leaks
    • Do not use if the solution is cloudy or a precipitate is present
    • Suspend container from hanger
    • Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
  • Intravenous Administration: Levofloxacin injection should only be administered by slow intravenous infusion

Interactions

  • Contraindicated Co-administration: No quinolone should be co-administered with any solution containing multivalent cations
  • Reduced Absorption:
    • Antacids
    • Iron
    • Adsorbents
  • Potential Risks:
    • NSAID may increase the risk of CNS stimulation
    • Warfarin may increase the risk of bleeding

Contraindications

Levofloxacin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, quinolone antimicrobial agents, or any other components of this product.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Levofloxacin is not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing due to unknown effects on the unborn child or nursing infant.

Precautions

  • Levofloxacin Injection should only be administered by slow intravenous infusion
  • Adequate water intake to avoid concentrated urine
  • Dose adjustment in renal insufficiency

Overdose Effects

Levofloxacin exhibits a low potential for acute toxicity. In case of acute overdosage, the stomach should be emptied and the patient should be kept under observation with appropriate hydration maintained.
