Description
Synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration
Mode of Action
Inhibition of bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
Dosage
- Usual doses of 250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg administered orally
- Administered without regard to food
- Oral solution taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating
- Injection administered by slow infusion
- Sequential therapy (intravenous to oral) may be instituted

Interaction
- No co-administration with any solution containing multivalent cations
- Reduction of absorption by antacids, iron, and adsorbents
- Increased risk with NSAIDs and warfarin
Contraindications
Not recommended for patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents
Side Effects
Risk of retinal detachment, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, phototoxicity
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Administration by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate water intake to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in the presence of renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
Low potential for acute toxicity, stomach should be emptied
