Description
Synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration
Pharmacology
Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
Dosage
- Usual dose of 250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg administered orally every 24 hours
- Administered without regard to food
- Oral solution should be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating
- Dosage for specific infections in adults and children
Administration
- Instructions for the use of Levofloxacin infusion
- Can be administered intravenously
Interaction
- Should not be co-administered with solutions containing multivalent cations
- Reduced absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents
- Increased risk of CNS stimulation with NSAIDs
- Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin
Contraindications
Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents
Side Effects
- Risk of retinal detachment
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity (0.1%)
- Rare side effects like tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate hydration to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
Exhibits low potential for acute toxicity; stomach should be emptied in case of overdosage
