Indications
- Treatment of mild, moderate, and severe infections caused by susceptible strains of micro-organisms
- Acute maxillary sinusitis
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Urinary tract infections
- Pyelonephritis
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Enteric infections
Pharmacology
- Inhibition of bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
- Required for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination
- Activity against wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms
Dosage
- 250 mg or 500 mg or 750 mg administered orally every 24 hours
- Can be administered without regard to food
- Oral solution should be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating
- Injection administered by intravenous infusion
- Different dosages for various conditions and age groups
- Sequential therapy (intravenous to oral) may be instituted

Interaction
- Avoid co-administration with solutions containing multivalent cations
- Reduced absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents
- Increased risk of CNS stimulation with NSAIDs
- Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, quinolone antimicrobial agents, or any other components of the product
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
- Rare occurrences of phototoxicity, retinal detachment, tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
- Effects on the unborn child or nursing infant are unknown
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate hydration to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment required in renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Low potential for acute toxicity
- In case of acute overdosage, empty the stomach, observe the patient, and maintain appropriate hydration
