Indications

  • Treatment of mild, moderate, and severe infections caused by susceptible strains of micro-organisms
  • Acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Enteric infections

Pharmacology

  • Inhibition of bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
  • Required for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination
  • Activity against wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms

Dosage

  • 250 mg or 500 mg or 750 mg administered orally every 24 hours
  • Can be administered without regard to food
  • Oral solution should be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating
  • Injection administered by intravenous infusion
  • Different dosages for various conditions and age groups
  • Sequential therapy (intravenous to oral) may be instituted

Administration

Interaction

  • Avoid co-administration with solutions containing multivalent cations
  • Reduced absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents

Contraindications

  • History of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, quinolone antimicrobial agents, or any other components of the product

Side Effects

  • Generally well tolerated
  • Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
  • Rare occurrences of phototoxicity, retinal detachment, tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
  • Effects on the unborn child or nursing infant are unknown

Precautions & Warnings

  • Administered by slow intravenous infusion
  • Adequate hydration to avoid concentrated urine
  • Dose adjustment required in renal insufficiency

Overdose Effects

  • Low potential for acute toxicity
  • In case of acute overdosage, empty the stomach, observe the patient, and maintain appropriate hydration
