Description
A synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration
Pharmacology
Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
Dosage
- Usual doses of 250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg
- Administered orally or through intravenous infusion

Exerts inhibitory action on bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
Administration
Instructions for use of Levofloxacin Infusion, sequential therapy for intravenous to oral administration
Interaction
No co-administration with solutions containing multivalent cations, reduced absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents, increased risk with NSAIDs and warfarin
Contraindications
Patients with history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents
Side Effects
- Risk of retinal detachment
- Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, phototoxicity (0.1%)
- Rare side effects: tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing, effects on unborn child or nursing infant are unknown
Precautions & Warnings
- Administration by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate hydration recommended to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment for renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
Low potential for acute toxicity, stomach should be emptied in case of acute overdosage, patients should be kept under observation, and appropriate hydration maintained
