Description
Synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration
Pharmacology
Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
Dosage
- 250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg administered orally every 24 hours
- 750 mg administered by slow infusion over 90 minutes every 24 hours

Instructions for the Use of Levofloxacin Infusion
Interaction
- Avoid co-administration with any solution containing multivalent cations
- Reduction of absorption by antacids, iron, and adsorbents
- Increased risk of CNS stimulation with NSAID
- Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin
Contraindications
Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents
Side Effects
- Risk of retinal detachment
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity (0.1%)
- Rarely seen tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate intake of water to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in renal insufficiency
