Description

Synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration.

Indications

  • Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Treatment of enteric infections

Pharmacology

Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase

Dosage

  • Usual Dose: 250 mg, 500 mg or 750 mg administered orally every 24 hours
  • Oral Solution: Taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating
  • Injection: Administered by intravenous infusion

Administration

  • Instructions:
    • Check container for leaks
    • Do not use if solution is cloudy
    • Do not use flexible containers in series connections
    • Close flow control clamp
    • Suspend container from hanger
    • Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp

Interaction

  • Cautions:
    • Avoid co-administration with multivalent cations
    • Antacids, iron, and adsorbents reduce absorption
    • NSAID may increase risk of CNS stimulation
    • Warfarin may increase risk of bleeding

Contraindications

Patients with history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents
