Indications
- Treatment of mild, moderate and severe infections caused by susceptible micro-organisms
- Acute maxillary sinusitis
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Enteric infections
Pharmacology
- Inhibits bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
- Required for DNA replication, transcription repair and recombination
- In vitro activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms
Dosage
- Available doses: 250mg, 500mg, 750mg tablets and oral solution
- Oral administration every 24 hours
- Intravenous infusion for injection
- Dosage varies based on infection type and severity
- Sequential therapy from intravenous to oral at physician's discretion
Administration
- Specific instructions for the use of levofloxacin infusion
- Check container for leaks
- Do not use if solution is cloudy or contains a precipitate
- Suspend container from hanger during infusion
- Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid co-administration with multivalent cations
- Reduced absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents
- Potential increase in CNS stimulation with NSAID
- Potential increase in bleeding risk with warfarin
