Indications

  • Treatment of mild, moderate and severe infections caused by susceptible micro-organisms
  • Acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Enteric infections

Pharmacology

  • Inhibits bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
  • Required for DNA replication, transcription repair and recombination
  • In vitro activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms

Dosage

  • Available doses: 250mg, 500mg, 750mg tablets and oral solution
  • Oral administration every 24 hours
  • Intravenous infusion for injection
  • Dosage varies based on infection type and severity
  • Sequential therapy from intravenous to oral at physician's discretion

Administration

  • Specific instructions for the use of levofloxacin infusion
  • Check container for leaks
  • Do not use if solution is cloudy or contains a precipitate
  • Suspend container from hanger during infusion
  • Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp

Interaction

  • Avoid co-administration with multivalent cations
  • Reduced absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents
  • Potential increase in CNS stimulation with NSAID
  • Potential increase in bleeding risk with warfarin

  • Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin
  • Quinolone antimicrobial agents
  • Pregnancy
  • Nursing

  • Administer via slow intravenous infusion
  • Ensure adequate water intake to avoid concentrated urine
  • Dose adjustment in renal insufficiency

Overdose Effects

  • Low potential for acute toxicity
  • Stomach should be emptied in case of acute overdosage
  • Patients should be kept under observation
  • Maintain appropriate hydration
