Indications

Description
- Synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative
- Chiral fluorinated carboxyquinolone
Pharmacology
- Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
- In vitro activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms
Dosage
- Available in 250 mg, 500 mg, and 750 mg tablets
- Can be administered without regard to food
- Injection administered by intravenous infusion only
- Usual dose of tablets is 250 mg, 500 mg every 24 hours
- Injection should be administered by slow infusion over 60 or 90 minutes

Interactions
- Avoid co-administration with solutions containing multivalent cations
- Reduced absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents

Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones or product components
Side Effects
- Risk of retinal detachment
- Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity (0.1%)
- Very rare side effects include tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
Precautions and Warnings
- Should be administered by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate water intake to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in the presence of renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Low potential for acute toxicity
- In the event of acute overdosage, stomach should be emptied
- Patients should be kept under observation and hydration maintained
