Indications

Description
Synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial agent for oral administration
Pharmacology
Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
Dosage
- Usual dose of 250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg administered orally every 24 hours
- Dosage for different infections in adults and children
Administration
- Check container for leaks
- Do not use if solution is cloudy or a precipitate is present
- Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- No co-administration with solutions containing multivalent cations
- Antacids, iron and adsorbents reduce absorption
- NSAID may increase risk of CNS stimulation
- Warfarin may increase risk of bleeding
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents
Side Effects
- Risk of retinal detachment
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity (0.1%)
- Rarely: tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate water intake to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in presence of renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
Low potential for acute toxicity, stomach should be emptied in case of overdosage
