Description
Synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration.
Pharmacology
Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase. Has in vitro activity against a wide range of microorganisms.
Dosage
- Usual doses of 250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg administered orally every 24 hours
- Administration without regard to food
- Intravenous infusion for injection
- Sequential therapy (intravenous to oral) may be instituted
Administration
- Instructions for the Use of Levofloxacin Infusion
- Check container for leaks
- Do not use if solution is cloudy or a precipitate is present
- Suspend container from hanger
- Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- No co-administration with multivalent cations
- Reduced absorption with antacids, iron, and adsorbents
- Increased risk of CNS stimulation with NSAIDs
- Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin
Contraindications
Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, quinolone antimicrobial agents, or any other components
Side Effects
- Risk of retinal detachment
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity (0.1%)
- Rarely seen side-effects include tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate water intake to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
Exhibits low potential for acute toxicity. Stomach should be emptied in case of acute overdosage
