Description
Neolev is a synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration.
Pharmacology
Levofloxacin exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase, the enzymes required for DNA replication, transcription repair and recombination.
Dosage
250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg tablets administered orally every 24 hours.
Administration
Levofloxacin infusion should be checked for leaks, not used if cloudy or with precipitate, and should be administered by slow intravenous infusion.
Interaction
Levofloxacin should not be co-administered with solutions containing multivalent cations, and its absorption can be reduced by antacids, iron, or adsorbents.
Contraindications
Levofloxacin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, rare occurrence of phototoxicity, tremors, depression, anxiety, and confusion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing.
Precautions & Warnings
Administered by slow intravenous infusion, adequate water intake is recommended, and dose adjustment is necessary in the presence of renal insufficiency.
Overdose Effects
Neolev exhibits a low potential for acute toxicity. In the event of acute overdosage, the stomach should be emptied.
