Indications
- Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of specific bacteria
- Promising treatment for other ocular infections including bacterial corneal ulcer, blepharitis, hordeolum & perioperative condition
Pharmacology
- Sterile topical ophthalmic solution
- Synthetic, broad spectrum, third generation fluoroquinolone bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive & Gram-negative ocular pathogens
- Inhibits bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase enzymes necessary for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination
Dosage & Administration
- 0.5% eye drop for adults and children 1 year of age and older
- 1-2 drops every 2 hours while awake for the first 2 days, then every 4 hours up to 4 times per day for the next 5 days
- 1.5% eye drop for adults and children 6 years and older
- One to two drops every 30 minutes to 2 hours while awake and 4-6 hours after retiring for the first 3 days, then every 1 to 4 hours while awake until treatment completion
- Safety and effectiveness for children under 1 year not established
Interaction
- Specific drug interaction studies not conducted
- Systemic administration of some quinolones shown to elevate plasma concentrations of theophylline
- Interference with the metabolism of caffeine
- Enhanced effects of the oral anticoagulant warfarin and its derivatives
Contraindications
- Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Levofloxacin, other quinolones, or any of the components of this medication

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi
- Discontinue use and institute alternative therapy if superinfection occurs
