Pharmacology
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Broad spectrum
- Inhibition of bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
- DNA replication inhibition
- DNA transcription inhibition
Dosage & Administration
- 0.5% eye drop for adults and children 1 year or older
- 1-2 drops every 2 hours for days 1 and 2
- 1-2 drops every 4 hours for days 3-7
- 1.5% eye drop for adults and children 6 years or older
- 1-2 drops every 30 minutes to 2 hours for days 1-3
- 1-2 drops every 1 to 4 hours for day 4 through treatment completion
- Not established for children under 1 year
Interaction
- Elevation of plasma concentrations of theophylline
- Interference with caffeine metabolism
- Enhanced effects of oral anticoagulant warfarin and its derivatives
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin
- Hypersensitivity to quinolones or any components of the medication
