Indications

Pharmacology

  • Bacterial gyrase inhibitor
  • Gram positive bacteria
  • Gram negative bacteria
  • Low acute toxicity
  • Interferes with bacterial DNA processes
  • Target molecule: A-subunit of bacterial enzyme gyrase
  • Rapid killing of sensitive bacteria
  • Cross-resistance with other quinolones
  • No clinical studies available for chlamydia infections

Dosage

  • For adults and children above 1 year of age
  • Instill 2-3 times daily
  • Duration of treatment: 7-9 days

Administration

  • May be taken with or without food

Interaction

  • Avoid ophthalmic preparations containing heavy metals
  • Avoid bacteriostatic ophthalmic antibiotics

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to active ingredient, excipients, or quinolones
  • Long term antibiotic treatment may enhance development of secondary fungal infections
  • Support growth of non-susceptible bacteria

Side Effects

  • Slight and transient burning
  • Phototoxicity not reported after ophthalmic use
  • Possible photosensitization
  • Reported allergic reactions: asthma, dyspnea, urticaria, erythema, pruritus, hypersensitization

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Animal studies show passage through placenta barrier
  • Excretion into maternal milk
  • No clinical studies available for human pregnancy or lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Isolated cases of phototoxicity reported after systemic use
  • Avoid intensive exposure to sunlight or UV-radiation

Overdose Effects

  • Practically no risk of adverse effects due to accidental oral ingestion
