Indications
- Bacterial conjunctivitis treatment
- Treatment of susceptible strains of microorganisms
- Intraocular Antibiotic for preventing endophthalmitis
Pharmacology
- Inhibition of topoisomerase II and IV
- Role in replication, transcription, and repair of bacterial DNA
- Key role in partitioning of chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division
Dosage & Administration
- Eye Drops: 3 times per day for 7 days
- Eye Ointment: 3 times a day for 2 days, then 2 times a day
- Intraocular injection: Administered prior to ocular surgery as determined by the doctor
Interaction
- No drug-drug interaction studies conducted
- Inhibition of specific cytochrome P450 isozymes unlikely
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or quinolones
- Hypersensitivity to any components in the medication
Side Effects
- Frequently reported ocular adverse events: conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, keratitis, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, tearing
- Nonocular adverse events reported
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy if benefits justify risks
- Potential excretion in human milk
- Exercise caution when administered to nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms
- Discontinue use if superinfection occurs
- Examination with magnification
- Advisement against wearing contact lenses with signs of bacterial conjunctivitis
