Indications
- Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by specific microorganisms
- Intraocular Antibiotic for preventing Postoperative Bacterial Endophthalmitis
Pharmacology
- Antimicrobial action by inhibition of topoisomerase II and topoisomerase IV
- Inhibition of DNA gyrase essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair
- Key role in partitioning chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division by topoisomerase IV
Dosage & Administration
- Eye Drops: One drop in affected eye 3 times per day for 7 days
- Eye Ointment: Thin and even application 3 times a day for 2 days, followed by 2 times a day for 5 days
- Intraocular Injection: Administered as 0.2-0.4 ml dose prior to ocular surgery via intraocular route
Interaction
- In vitro studies indicate no inhibition of specific cytochrome P450 isozymes
Contraindications
- Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other quinolones
- Patients sensitive to any components in the medication
Side Effects
- Frequently reported ocular adverse events
- Nonocular adverse events reported at specific rates
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Caution during nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
- Examination with the aid of magnification and fluorescein staining when clinically indicated
- Advice against wearing contact lenses if signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis
