Indications

  • Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of specified organisms

Intraocular Injection Use

Highly effective for preventing postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis

Mode of Action

Inhibition of topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV

Dosage and Administration

  • One drop in the affected eye 3 times per day for 7 days
  • Thinly and evenly applied eye ointment 3 times a day for 2 days, then 2 times a day
  • Intraocular injection administered as 0.2-0.4 ml dose prior to ocular surgery

Interaction

In vitro studies indicate no inhibition of specified cytochrome P450 isozymes

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin
  • Hypersensitivity to other quinolones
  • Hypersensitivity to any components in the medication

Side Effects

  • Ocular adverse events: conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, keratitis, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, tearing
  • Nonocular adverse events: fever, increased cough, infection, otitis media, pharyngitis, rash, rhinitis

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy justified if benefit outweighs risk to fetus
  • Caution advised when administered to nursing mother

Precautions and Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
  • Discontinue use if superinfection occurs
  • Examination with magnification recommended
  • Patients advised not to wear contact lenses if signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis present
