Indications

  • Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of specific organisms
  • Indicated for Aerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms

Pharmacology

  • Antimicrobial action results from inhibition of topoisomerase II and topoisomerase IV
  • DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV are essential enzymes involved in bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair
  • Key role in partitioning of chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division

Dosage & Administration

One drop in the affected eye(s) 2 times daily for 7 days

  • Ocular adverse events include eye irritation, pyrexia, conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, tearing

Pregnancy & Lactation

Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus, caution during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms

Use in Special Populations

  • Safety and effectiveness in infants below four months not proven
  • May be used safely in children younger than one month
  • No overall differences in safety and effectiveness observed between elderly and younger patients

Overdose Effects

Practically no risk of adverse effects due to accidental ingestion
