Optimox 0.5% (Ophthalmic Solution)

Indications

• Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis
• Effective intraocular antibiotic for preventing postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis

Pharmacology

• Antimicrobial action from inhibition of topoisomerase II and IV
• Involvement in replication, transcription, and repair of bacterial DNA

Dosage & Administration

• Eye drops: 3 times per day for 7 days
• Eye ointment: 3 times a day for first two days, then 2 times a day
• Intraocular injection: 0.2-0.4 ml dose prior to ocular surgery

Interaction

• Inhibition of cytochrome P450 isozymes unlikely

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or quinolones

Side Effects

• Frequently reported ocular adverse events: conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, keratitis, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, tearing
• Nonocular adverse events: fever, increased cough, infection, otitis media, pharyngitis, rash, rhinitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Use during pregnancy if benefit justifies potential risk
• Caution during nursing

Precautions & Warnings

• Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
• Examination with magnification recommended
• Patients advised not to wear contact lenses with bacterial conjunctivitis

• Do not freeze
• Store in cool and dry place, protected from light
• Keep out of the reach of children
• Do not touch dropper tip to any surface
• Do not use after one month of first opening
