Indications

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis treatment
  • Intraocular antibiotic for endophthalmitis prevention
  • Treatment for susceptible aerobic Gram-positive microorganisms
  • Treatment for susceptible aerobic Gram-negative microorganisms
  • Treatment for Chlamydia trachomatis

Pharmacology

  • Antimicrobial action through inhibition of topoisomerase II
  • Inhibition of topoisomerase IV
  • Replication, transcription and repair of bacterial DNA
  • Role in partitioning of chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division

Dosage & Administration

  • One drop in affected eye 3 times per day for 7 days (Eye Drops)
  • Thin and even application 3 times a day for first 2 days, then 2 times a day for next 5 days (Eye Ointment)
  • Intraocular administration as 0.2-0.4 ml dose prior to ocular surgery (Intraocular injection)

Interaction

  • No drug-drug interaction studies conducted
  • In vitro studies suggest no inhibition of certain cytochrome P450 isozymes

Contraindications

  • Patients with history of hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other quinolones
  • Patients with hypersensitivity to any components in the medication

Side Effects

  • Frequently reported ocular adverse events like conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, keratitis, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, tearing
  • Non-ocular adverse events like fever, increased cough, infection, otitis media, pharyngitis, rash, rhinitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use in pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
  • Potential excretion in human milk, caution in nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
  • Discontinue use if superinfection occurs
  • Examination with magnification when appropriate
  • Advice against wearing contact lenses with signs of bacterial conjunctivitis
