Indications
- Bacterial conjunctivitis treatment
- Intraocular antibiotic for endophthalmitis prevention
- Treatment for susceptible aerobic Gram-positive microorganisms
- Treatment for susceptible aerobic Gram-negative microorganisms
- Treatment for Chlamydia trachomatis
Pharmacology
- Antimicrobial action through inhibition of topoisomerase II
- Inhibition of topoisomerase IV
- Replication, transcription and repair of bacterial DNA
- Role in partitioning of chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division
Dosage & Administration
- One drop in affected eye 3 times per day for 7 days (Eye Drops)
- Thin and even application 3 times a day for first 2 days, then 2 times a day for next 5 days (Eye Ointment)
- Intraocular administration as 0.2-0.4 ml dose prior to ocular surgery (Intraocular injection)
Interaction
- No drug-drug interaction studies conducted
- In vitro studies suggest no inhibition of certain cytochrome P450 isozymes
Contraindications
- Patients with history of hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other quinolones
- Patients with hypersensitivity to any components in the medication
Side Effects
- Frequently reported ocular adverse events like conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, keratitis, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, tearing
- Non-ocular adverse events like fever, increased cough, infection, otitis media, pharyngitis, rash, rhinitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use in pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
- Potential excretion in human milk, caution in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
- Discontinue use if superinfection occurs
- Examination with magnification when appropriate
- Advice against wearing contact lenses with signs of bacterial conjunctivitis
