Mode of Action
- Inhibition of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV
- Kills many types of bacteria infecting breathing airways and lungs
- Broad-spectrum antibacterial activity
- More effective than other fluoroquinolones against certain organisms
- Well absorbed following oral administration
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended daily dose for patients with normal renal function
- Recommended daily dose for patients with renal impairment
- Loading dose on the first day
- Daily administration for a specific duration
- Adjustment of dose based on renal function
Interaction
- Chelation with aluminum and magnesium cations
- Concomitant use with medications affecting QTc interval
- No interaction with theophylline, caffeine, warfarin, or cimetidine
- Probenecid does not alter pharmacokinetics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any ingredients
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
- History of Achilles tendinitis following fluoroquinolones use

- Maintain adequate hydration
- Use with caution in renal insufficiency
- Avoid excessive sunlight exposure
- Avoid concomitant prescription of medications prolonging QTc interval
Use in Special Populations
- Geriatric: Unaltered pharmacokinetics with normal renal function
- Pediatric: Pharmacokinetics not studied
- Gender: No gender differences in pharmacokinetics
- Renal insufficiency: Altered pharmacokinetics and dosing adjustments
- Hepatic impairment: Unaltered pharmacokinetics in mild or moderate impairment without cholestasis
