Precautions
- Maintain adequate hydration

Use in Special Populations
- No alteration in elderly with normal renal function
- No gender differences in pharmacokinetics
- Plasma concentrations in renal impairment patients are double
- No alteration in patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment without cholestasis

Indications
- Indicated for the treatment of Community-acquired Pneumonia (CAP)
- Indicated for the treatment of Acute Bacterial Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis (ABECB)
- Also indicated for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Additional uses include treatment of tuberculosis in combination with rifampicin and isoniazid and treatment of leprosy in combination with standard drugs
Pharmacology
- Kills many types of bacteria infecting breathing airways and lungs
- More effective against some gram positive organisms, Mycobacteria, and Chlamydia spp.
- Well absorbed following oral administration
- Exhibits low plasma protein binding in serum
- Metabolized primarily by phase II glucuronidation
- Excreted in feces and urine
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended daily dose for patients with normal renal function: Two 200 mg tablets on the first day, then one 200 mg tablet every 24 hours for 10 days
Interaction
- Forms chelation complexes with aluminium and magnesium cations in antacids and sucralfate
- Does not interact with theophylline, caffeine, warfarin, cimetidine, and probenecid
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
- History of Achilles tendinitis following the use of fluoroquinolones
Pediatric Uses
- Pharmacokinetics not studied in paediatric subjects
