Indications
- Treatment of tuberculosis

Pharmacology
- Suppression of chain formation for RNA synthesis
- Binding to β subunit of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase
- Blocking RNA transcription
Dosage
- Oral administration
- IV infusion
- Recommended oral administration once daily
- 10 mg/kg for adults
- 10-20 mg/kg for pediatric patients
- Three-drug regimen for initial phase of short-course therapy
- Continued treatment with rifampin and isoniazid for at least 4 months
Administration
- Take on an empty stomach
- Best taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals
Interaction
- May accelerate the metabolism of drugs metabolized by CYP450 enzymes
- Potential interactions with quinidine, phenytoin, theophylline, atovaquone, ketoconazole, enalaprilat, antacids, halothane, isoniazid
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to rifampin or any components
- Contraindicated with ritonavir-boosted saquinavir
- Contraindicated with atazanavir, darunavir, fosamprenavir, saquinavir, tipranavir
