Indications
- Herpes zoster (shingles)
- Recurrent herpes labialis
- Genital herpes
- Acute treatment of recurrent mucocutaneous herpes in HIV-infected patients
- Acute treatment of recurrent episodes of genital herpes
- Suppression of recurrent episodes of genital herpes
Mode of Action
- Biotransformation to penciclovir
- Inhibitory activity against HSV types 1 and 2, varicella-zoster virus (VZV)
- Competing with deoxyguanosine triphosphate
- Inhibiting herpes viral DNA synthesis and replication
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration for adults
- Different dosages for various indications and patient groups
- Dosage adjustment for patients with renal impairment
Interaction
- Reduced renal excretion resulting in increased plasma concentration with probenecid
- Raloxifen may reduce the formation of penciclovir
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to famciclovir and penciclovir
