Indications
- Treatment of HIV-1 infection
- Based on plasma HIV-RNA levels and CD4 cell counts
Description
- Synthetic antiretroviral agent
- Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor
Pharmacology
- Blocks RNA and DNA-dependent polymerase activities including HIV-1 replication
Dosage
- 600 mg orally once daily for adults
- Weight-based dosing for pediatric patients
Administration
- Recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime
Interaction
- Additive CNS effects with psychoactive drugs
- May alter plasma warfarin concentrations
- May reduce plasma concentrations of HIV integrase inhibitors
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Lactation
- Concomitant administration with specific drugs

- Women taking hormone-based birth control
- Paediatric use
Use in Special Populations
- Not studied in pediatric patients below 3 years of age or who weigh less than 10 kg
- Avifanz may make hormone-based birth control ineffective

- Increased adverse CNS effects including involuntary muscle contractions
