Indications
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in adults
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in pediatric patients
Pharmacology
- Competes with natural substrate deoxyguanosine triphosphate
- Inhibits all three activities of the HBV polymerase
- Incorporated into the DNA to inhibit HBV polymerase activity
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose of 0.5 mg once daily for nucleoside-treatment-naive adults and adolescents
- Recommended dose of 1 mg once daily for Lamivudine-refractory patients
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions with Lamivudine or Adefovir dipivoxil
- Effects of co-administration with other drugs not evaluated
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Entecavir or any component
Side Effects
- Most common adverse events are headache, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No data on effect on transmission of HBV from mother to infant
- Not known whether excreted in human milk
- Mothers should be instructed not to breastfeed if taking Entecavir
Precautions & Warnings
- Lactic acidosis reported with use of nucleoside analogues
- Severe acute exacerbations of hepatitis B reported after discontinuation of anti-hepatitis B therapy
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients below 2 years not established
- Care in dose selection for geriatric patients
- Dose adjustment recommended for patients with renal impairment
Overdose Effects
- No reported experience of Cavir overdosage in patients
- No unexpected adverse events reported in healthy subjects receiving high doses
