Indications
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in adults
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in pediatric patients 2 years of age and older
- With evidence of active viral replication
- With evidence of persistent elevation in serum aminotransferases
- With histologically active disease
Pharmacology
- Competes with the natural substrate deoxyguanosine triphosphate
- Functionally inhibits all three activities of the HBV polymerase
- Inhibits the HBV polymerase activity upon activation by kinases
- Can be incorporated into the DNA to inhibit the HBV polymerase activity
Dosage & Administration
- 0.5 mg once daily for nucleoside-treatment-naive adults and adolescents 16 years of age
- 1 mg once daily for Lamivudine-refractory or known Lamivudine or Telbivudine resistance mutations
- Administered on an empty stomach
- Instructions for missed dose
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions with Lamivudine or Adefovir dipivoxil
- Effects of co-administration with other drugs not evaluated
- Patients should be monitored closely for adverse events when coadministered with certain drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with previously demonstrated hypersensitivity to Entecavir or any component of the product

Pregnancy & Lactation
- No data on the effect of Entecavir on the transmission of HBV from mother to infant
- Instructions for breastfeeding mothers regarding Entecavir usage
Precautions & Warnings
- Lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis reported with the use of nucleoside analogues
- Exacerbations of hepatitis after discontinuation of treatment reported
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients below the age of 2 years
- Dose adjustment in renal impairment
- Need for caution in geriatric patients
Overdose Effects
- No reported experience of Cavir overdosage in patients
- Healthy subjects received up to 20 mg daily for up to 14 days with no unexpected adverse events
