Indications
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in adults
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in pediatric patients 2 years of age and older
- Treatment for patients with evidence of active viral replication and either evidence of persistent elevation in serum aminotransferases
- Treatment for patients with evidence of active viral replication and histologically active disease
Pharmacology
- Competes with the natural substrate deoxyguanosine triphosphate
- Functionally inhibits all three activities of the HBV polymerase
- Inhibits base priming
- Inhibits reverse transcription of the negative strand from the pregenomic messenger RNA
- Inhibits synthesis of the positive strand of HBV DNA
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for nucleoside-treatment-naive adults and adolescents 16 years of age: 0.5 mg once daily
- Recommended dose for Lamivudine-refractory patients: 1 mg once daily
- Recommended dose for patients with decompensated liver disease: 1 mg once daily
- Should be administered on an empty stomach
- Instructions for missed dose
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions with Lamivudine
- No significant drug interactions with Adefovir dipivoxil
- Effects of co-administration with drugs eliminated through renal or known to affect renal function not evaluated
Contraindications
- Entecavir is contraindicated in patients with previously demonstrated hypersensitivity to Entecavir
Side Effects
- Most common adverse events include headache, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No data on the effect of Entecavir on the transmission of HBV from mother to infant
- Instructions for breastfeeding mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis reported with the use of nucleoside analogues
- Exacerbations of hepatitis after discontinuation of treatment reported
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients below the age of 2 years not established
- Use in geriatric population
- Dose adjustment in renal impairment
Overdose Effects
- No reported experience of Barcavir overdosage in patients
- Experienced with healthy subjects
- Instructions for monitoring and treatment in case of overdosage
