Indications
- In combination with other antiretroviral agents, for the treatment of HIV-1 infection
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B in adults
Pharmacology
- Mechanism of Action: Inhibits the activity of HIV reverse transcriptase
- Pharmacokinetics: Water soluble diester prodrug with low protein binding and half life of 17 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Administered orally once daily for adults
- Dosage adjusted based on individual patient's needs
- Recommended dosage in pediatric patients
Interactions
- Cautious coadministration with didanosine
- Monitoring for adverse reactions with atazanavir and lopinavir/ritonavir
Contraindications
- Broken bone due to disease or illness
- Severe liver disease
- Acute kidney disease
- Low amount of phosphate in the blood
- Increased blood acidity due to high levels of lactic acid
