Indications
- Treatment of HIV-1 infection
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B in adults
Pharmacology
- Inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase
- Water soluble diester prodrug
- Low protein binding
- Approximately 17-hour half-life
Dosage & Administration
- Administered once daily orally
- Recommended dose in adults and pediatric patients
Interaction
- Cautious coadministration with didanosine
- Monitoring required with atazanavir and lopinavir/ritonavir
Contraindications
- Broken bone due to disease or illness
- Severe liver disease
- Acute kidney disease
- Breastfeeding
- Low phosphate levels in the blood

Use in Special Populations

- No dose adjustment for mild renal impairment
