Indications
- Prevention of flu in adults

Pharmacology
- Oseltamivir is a prodrug of oseltamivir carboxylate
- Oseltamivir carboxylate inhibits neuraminidase
- Inhibition of viral surface enzyme
- Prevention of the release of viruses from infected cells
Dosage
- Can be taken with or without food
- Enhanced tolerability when taken with food
- Standard oral dose for treatment in adults and adolescents
- Recommended oral dose for prophylaxis in adults and adolescents
- Safety and efficacy not established for pediatric patients
Administration
- May be taken with meals to reduce GI discomfort
- Cap can be opened and mixed with sweetened food products
- Swallow mixture immediately after preparation
Interaction
- Unlikely clinically significant drug interactions
- No alteration of plasma levels with co-administration of amoxicillin
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any components
Side Effects
- Frequently reported adverse events of nausea and vomiting
- Additional adverse events occurring in less than 1% of patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Insufficient human data for risk evaluation
- Unknown excretion in human milk
- Use justified if potential benefit outweighs potential risk
Precautions & Warnings
- No evidence for efficacy in illnesses caused by agents other than influenza viruses
- Efficacy not established in patients starting treatment after 40 hours of symptoms
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and pharmacokinetics not evaluated in patients with hepatic impairment
- Dose adjustment recommended for patients with renal impairment
- Safety established in geriatric use
- Safety and efficacy not studied in pediatric patients younger than 1 year old
Overdose Effects
- No experience of overdose
- Associations of nausea and/or vomiting with single doses up to 1000 mg
